Women First

Resolution month has come and gone! When it comes to our health, internal motivation has taken many of us as far as possible... unfortunately not far enough. February brings us both Valentine’s Day and Heart Month. Now is the time to focus on the HEART of the matter.

Men buy their wives flowers, candy and diamond hearts, while women reciprocate by scheduling their husbands for heart check-ups. Many doctors still worry about the hearts of their male patients more than their female counterparts. This bias has continued for decades, but this is changing. "The reality is that coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men AND women. American women are 4 to 6 times more likely to die of heart disease than of breast cancer. Furthermore, heart disease kills more women over 65 years of age than all cancers combined," says Dr. Shailja Parikh.

Drs. Shruti Boorla and Shailja Parikh are well trained, female physicians specializing in caring for women with cardiovascular disease. We asked these female cardiologists how they assess women and what they consider as they care for women with heart disease.  Their answers can be divided into three parts - presentation, diagnosis and treatment.

Announcing the 2010 HeartFirst Hero of the Year: Adrianna Gamboa

The year 2010 brought many exciting changes to HeartFirst. We added two new cardiologists with Dr. Shruti Boorla and Dr. Shailja Parikh. New state of the art testing was added with Cardiac PET and SHAPE. And, in February we started our monthly employee recognition called the “HeartFirst Hero of the Month”.

Each month the staff submitted nominations and then voted for one of their peers to be recognized for going above and beyond and making HeartFirst a wonderful place to work. From February through December we recognized 11 very important team members: Leah Kimberling, Jeneva Porras, Shirley Gibbs, Elizabeth Trejo, Adrianna Gamboa, Scotty Lyons, Lisa Kipp, Elizabeth Glynn, Stephanie Patrick, Marina Chim and Maribel Valles. From the monthly winners the staff voted one special team member as the 2010 Hero of the Year and that person is Adrianna Gamboa.
