Coronary Artery Bypass Graft

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery, a.k.a.: CABG, bypass surgery and heart bypass, is a surgical procedure which is performed to relieve angina or chest pain and reduce the risk of death from coronary artery disease. The procedures involves arteries or veins from other places in the body, being grafted to the coronary arteries to bypass those arteries that are blocked by plaque buildup or atherosclerosis, thereby, improving the blood supply to the heart muscle. Usually this surgery is performed while the heart is stopped by using a cardiopulmonary bypass which keeps the blood flowing through the body. Another technique is called “off pump”, which means the heart is still beating.
